Advice to our customers on the abolition of the paper counterpart to the UK photo card licence.
From 8 June 2015, all customers with a UK driving licence will need to use the "View Driving Licence" or "Share Driving Licence" online services from the DVLA, for validation of their driving record.
This is required for both photo card driving licences as well as paper driving licences issued before 1998.
How does this change hiring a vehicle in the UK if I hold a UK driving licence issued in Great Britain?
The easiest way for us to validate your licence is still when you collect your vehicle from us. But please remember that you will need to know your National Insurance number when you are accessing the DVLA services - be this either at home, or at our premises.
When you collect your vehicle you need to bring with you:
- Your driving licence
- Your National Insurance number
- Your second form of identification showing the drivers name and address. This may be a utility bill or bank statement that is no more than 3 months old.
- Your valid credit or debit card.
We will then use the "View Driving Licence" service to validate your licence.
If you prefer you can use the "Share Driving Licence" service. You need to apply for this no more than 21 days before collecting your vehicle. The service generates a one-time pass code, it requires the driver to submit their Driving Licence number, National Insurance number and postcode. This pass code must be presented in addition to the above list when collecting your hire vehicle. Please visit View Driving Licence
or call the DVLA on 0300 083 0013 (Monday - Friday 9am-5pm) for further information.
Non-UK licence holders hiring a vehicle in the UK are unaffected by this change, although all previous rules still apply.
I have an old style driving licence, so does this affect me?
This change is only for the paper counterpart of the two part plastic licence, not to be confused with a paper driving licence issued before 1998. The pre 1998 licence continue to remain valid but, from 8 June 2015, will no longer be updated. Therefore you will still need to use the "View Driving Licence" service to validate your licence.
How do I gain access to my printed Driving Licence summary?
To obtain your Licence Summary visit View Driving Licence
where you can print a PDF. You will need your driving licence number, as well as your National Insurance number and the postcode displayed on your driving licence.
How does this change hiring a vehicle abroad if I hold a UK driving license issued in Great Britain?
